City of Rethymno

The town of Rethymnon is a small town that retains a strong medieval - renaissance colour. The old but extremely well-preserved historical centre of the town is located under the walls of the sleepless guardian, the Venetian Fortezza castle. The coastal zone of the Municipality of Rethymnon with its beautiful sandy beach and crystal clear sea, its Venetian harbour, its picturesque narrow streets, and the open-hearted inhabitants who offer their generous hospitality against the background of the historical monuments and the endless blue of the Cretan sea. Many are the sights of the city such as the famous Loggia of Rethymno, the church of the Lady of the Angels, the church of St. Francis, the Rimondi Fountain, the Metropolitan Church, etc. There are also several Turkish buildings, such as the Neratzes Mosque, the largest in the city, the Kara Musa Pasha Mosque where the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities is located and the Turkish school.
